‘Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes’ Movie Review: A Well Thought Out Comedy

The premise is quite overused already, but the manner in which the narrative was utilized in a fresh way. Judy Ann Santos and Angelica Panganiban play Cindy and Lianne, who coincidentally meet due to being married to Gary (Joross Gamboa) and Felix (JC De Vera), who apparently were having an affair together. This is one of the few times that a star power was pivotal when it comes to a film’s success as having two familiar faces makes it’s more outrageous aspect an easier sell. Sure, “Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes” oftentimes cross the fence when it comes to reality and campy ridiculousness, but throughout its course, it was able to maintain the core of its story, which is still rooted on real-world situations and experienced by some of us.<br /><div id="unruly-unit"></div><br />Lana’s approach on the tricky LGBTQ aspect of the story is both fun but non-fictional. More importantly, not in a way that is a blatant insult to members of that community, and the relationships they have. While it’s true that in the end, Gary and Felix’s technically sinful bond (not because of their sexual orientation but because they are married to other people) is the movie’s central plot device that kicks off the events that follows, it is handled in a way that is both fun and still sensitive to those who find themselves in the same hot spot. <br /><br />Despite the different twist in the cheating narrative, “Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes” was able to execute its plot points and even script in a way that it’s not alienating other people who may not be in the exact same situation, but can relate to the predicament. That movie-going audience has the right to have fun in the theater without feeling as if they’ve seen all the gags and the humorous bits elsewhere. The Revenger Squad <br />2. Ang Panday <br />3. Siargao<br />4. Haunted Forest<br /><br />The other four remaining entries still earned pretty good. All were able to reach more than P30 million, which is the highest in the recent MMFF history.<br /><br />All eight MMFF entries have already earned a total of P1.5 billion in gross sales. But the amount is still growing as some entries are still being shown in cinemas.<br /><br />MMFF spokesperson Noel Ferrer proudly explained that all eight entries earned very well, "Normally, may nagsi-single digit [na box-office performance] yung lowest. Yung lowest na ito, matter of millions lang ang difference. More than P30 million ang nakuha nung nasa bottom four.”<br /><br />Bing Advincula, Vice-chairman of the MMFF selection committee also confirmed that most of the sales came from the top 1 and 2 entries, "Sixty percent of the total box-office gross came from The Revenger Squad and Ang Panday."<br /><br />The top 1 entry, "The Revenger Squad" had already earned more than P500 million. Despite this, everyone can agree that the quintessential form of the Pinoy superhero remains to be Fernando Poe Jr.’s 1980 outing, and given Martin’s career trajectory seemingly trying to emulate “The King’s,” it makes sense that he gets a crack at one of his most iconic roles. Not just in terms of embodying the role, but also directing himself, just like Poe Jr. back in his day.<br /><div id="unruly-unit"></div><br />The best thing, however, that director Martin did with his version of “Ang Panday” is to put a contemporary flavor to it. Retreading the same story from the same origins story feels too redundant at this point. Presenting the new narrative as a continuation of the longstanding story opens up the lore in a way that the film does not film boxed by what its predecessors have set. Further, it gives the movie the ability to carve its own place in the string of “Ang Panday” films over the years. <br /><br />Unfortunately, “Ang Panday” does not offer something new in terms of cinematic storytelling. The tropes are too cliched just wrapped in a new way. Cuenca’s performance was convincing but is hindered by uncompelling motivations, leaving his iteration no different than other versions of the antagonist bar the fact that he makes Lizardo more stylish, making him scary in a different way. Nonetheless, if you want a thrilling action-adventure flick, there are enough interesting plot points that make it worth your while in the cinemas.<br /><br />“Ang Panday” is one of the eight films partaking in MMFF 2017. The overly-cute millennial type of love story just does not work with Cuneta and Padilla, not because they do not have any chemistry, but because it’s jarring that these two grown-ups act as if they are in their teens. The dialogs tend to be inappropriate, borderlining cringeworthy. And instead of developing a well-balanced story by highlighting the relationships of all the people across the board, “Unexpectedly Yours” focused its energy too much in making its veterans more like kids dabbling on the idea of first love.<br /><br />While the movie attempts to destigmatize mid-life crisis, it does it in an insensitive way. Patty’s weight and reaching menopausal stage were hammered way too much in the movie, to the point that despite being presented as humorous, it is almost a hurtful insult sugarcoated as a joke. The impact is no way diminished by having her acknowledge the same thing in a self-deprecating way, only made worse by her trying to act seductive all of a sudden. First, Garcia and Barreto once again prove that they have the acting chops to be worthy of being called actors. The two exudes chemistry despite not having much physical interaction. It’s such a shame that they were pushed aside, almost neglected, just to give way to their co-stars’ supposed love story.<br /><br />The second one is the superb dramatic scenes acted out by the cast, especially from Barretto and Cuneta. Their mother-daughter moments stood out in a way that they do not get over-the-top. No loud bawling, no screaming, no unending streaming down of tears, but audience can definitely feel the weight of their emotions just by looking at their faces. <br /><br />It’s hard to come to terms with the fact that despite great potential, “Unexpectedly Yours” misses the mark on several key points when it comes to rom-coms. Truly, it is not because Cuneta and Padilla can no longer work as a love-team given their age. If anything, Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta have proved that love stories are just for young adults. ‘Last Night’ Movie Review: A Dark Take On A Rather Feel-Good Love Story

Joyce Bernal titled, “Last Night.” Added crowd draw that the film’s treatment is Bella Padilla’s debut work as a screenwriter. A seemingly familiar romantic comedy film on the surface, the movie takes a darker and interesting spin with the introduction of the thriller and paranormal genre kicking of with Mark (Pascual) and Carmina’s (Gonzaga) supposed chance meeting while both are on the midst of committing suicide. Its various backlighting and scenic locations around old Manila definitely added to the overall viewing experience of watching “Last Night.” The street lamps and old architecture are charming backdrops which made it easy to believe how effortless it is to fall in love and get attached to someone whom you had just met -- especially when there’s already a brewing connection between the two of you. The two plays off of each other’s acting chops really well, making their characters believable and easy to relate to.<br /><div id="unruly-unit"></div><br />While the movie boldly lunges on a different spin at the romantic genre, its plot execution feels too stretched out at times. All throughout the movie, hints of a possible time-lapse are dropped with several newspaper clippings notable from the Martial Law era to the various changes in mood lighting and small details at the background that teases the plot twist. However, the reveal does not come until the third act, which by then, has lost its appeal and intrigue. We already know that a big surprise is coming and we know that it will change the way the whole film is initially perceived, but its prolonged wait time significantly diminishes the element of shock that is meant to go alongside it. <br /><br />Additionally, the paranormal side of the narrative does not seem to be as well honed as it could possibly. The cheerful commoner had his backstory crafted pretty decent that viewers were immediately invested on him, his family and his ultimate fate from the get-go. That said, the compromise to have Mika’s own life story only briefly glossed over but keep her search of aliens a recurring theme and at times, even a teased end game kept her in the loop and not relegated to just a supporting role. After all, “Love You To The Stars And Back” is supposedly about the story of two people.<br /><div id="unruly-unit"></div><br />However, the one thing that arguably stood out in this Star Cinema piece is the performance of Barretto and Garcia. Both young actors brought out their A-game which is furthered by their innate chemistry with each other. Boxed up in a car in majority of the film could have easily downgraded the actors’ ability to evoke “the feels” as their bodies were restricted, hence depending on their facial features to express their respective characters’ emotions at that point in time. <br /><br />If there are any doubts about Barretto’s acting chops and dubbed being nothing as a pretty face, her execution in “Love You To The Stars And Back” effectively squashed them. The project is a testament of her range - from comical to downright hysterical, she delivers every line with clarity and raw emotion and without missing a beat. Although to be fair, it resulted to a few chuckles, especially with the absurd chant Mika made on her own. Further, there were some parts in the first and second acts where the camera got a little bit too shaky. Whether those were intentional or not to drive the thriller/fantastical aspect of the movie, they were a bit jarring.<br /><br />Overall, “Love You To The Stars And Back” is a formulaic Star Cinema film - satisfying and massively appealing. But it’s greatness lies in the performance of Barretto and Garcia. To compare, “A Second Chance” achieved the same feat in just 10 days.<br /><br />Meanwhile, the record for the highest grossing Filipino film of all time is the 2014 MMFF entry, “The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin.” The comedy flick passed P456 million in 22 days, unseating “Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy,” an entry to the 2013 MMFF, for the title.<br /><br />“A Second Chance” just got extended for another week in 65 theaters in the U.S. and in 14 Canada theaters.
