‘Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes’ Movie Review: A Well Thought Out Comedy

Judy Ann Santos and Angelica Panganiban play Cindy and Lianne, who coincidentally meet due to being married to Gary (Joross Gamboa) and Felix (JC De Vera), who apparently were having an affair together. This is one of the few times that a star power was pivotal when it comes to a film’s success as having two familiar faces makes it’s more outrageous aspect an easier sell. Sure, “Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes” oftentimes cross the fence when it comes to reality and campy ridiculousness, but throughout its course, it was able to maintain the core of its story, which is still rooted on real-world situations and experienced by some of us.<br /><div id="unruly-unit"></div><br />Lana’s approach on the tricky LGBTQ aspect of the story is both fun but non-fictional. More importantly, not in a way that is a blatant insult to members of that community, and the relationships they have. While it’s true that in the end, Gary and Felix’s technically sinful bond (not because of their sexual orientation but because they are married to other people) is the movie’s central plot device that kicks off the events that follows, it is handled in a way that is both fun and still sensitive to those who find themselves in the same hot spot. <br /><br />Despite the different twist in the cheating narrative, “Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes” was able to execute its plot points and even script in a way that it’s not alienating other people who may not be in the exact same situation, but can relate to the predicament. That movie-going audience has the right to have fun in the theater without feeling as if they’ve seen all the gags and the humorous bits elsewhere. Samsung Galaxy Book 10.6-in review: Affordable, long-lasting

Let’s dig in the full review for 10.6-in version of Galaxy Book.<br /><br /><b>THE PREMIUM DESIGN</b><br /><br />The Galaxy Book comes in two versions: a compact 10.6-in and a fully-packed 12-in tab model. They are both metal-bodied with glass-fronted slates and include keyboard covers that turn them into work-ready laptops. With that, you might think that you need to invest in some dongles to hook up all your accessories. But as you would notice from now, a lot of third-party manufacturers are in transition in producing accessories with that universal USB type-C ports. And for the speaker, it might not sound as crisp as you may have expected and little bass effect is just the average. It is touchscreen after all with a decent response. It all feels well-constructed, but the rounded corners and smooth curves just don’t give the same impression of luxury as Microsoft’s Surface. <br /><br />The camera, it has front-facing 5MP snapper which really is best used for video calling. Although it can’t match AMOLED displays for contrast, what gives impression is the overly saturated hues of the display which make it satisfyingly good display. Plus, it does so completely silently. That is no problem given that there is a specific demographic that these kinds of movie cater to, but just because these people are on in for the fun, does not mean that they have to settle for a poorly constructed flick with a rather messy plot that is only there to evoke a few chuckles.<br /><br />The thing about “The Revenger Squad,” however, is that it caters to a certain brand of humor. If you’re a fan of the sarcastic and snarky, Vice Ganda-trademark, then this film definitely delivered on that front. <br /><br />Additionally, there are the witty names of other characters which Filipinos can definitely pick-up. Unfortunately, outside of that, it doesn’t venture much. The jokes are lazy and mostly rooted in making fun of people’s physical appearance. So, some moviegoers who would want some refreshing humor could unfortunately feel like it’s not entertaining enough, or very repetitive and worse, even offensive. Its demeaning quips that could almost be equated to bullying being passed up as something funny is not okay. Then again, it’s best to assume that people who endeavor to watch the movie is not looking for something new, but for something more granted this is Vice Ganda’s humor wheelhouse. <br /><br />The Bb. Joyce Bernal-directed movie, however, is the most effective when it does not convolute its narrative with supposed superhero storyline. When it unabashedly embraces that it is a comedic film more than anything, then it’s easier to disregard its glaring plot flaws in an already very thin narrative. <br /><br />By all means, it’s almost criminal to categorize the film as a superhero project as aside from expositions and campy supposed supernatural powers that the characters have, there is really nothing more to it in that genre. It’s actually a mystery why Wurtzbach is even part of it. Not that she’s not effective, it’s just that she does not really have any purpose other than to be the embodiment of being physically beautiful -- a plot device with which Vice Ganda can tap on to deliver her sassy remarks. But it’s kind of frustrating that this kind of disjointed and poorly-made flick is part of the MMFF -- an annual movie festival that should honor the best of the best in terms of Filipino filmmaking. Just because it’s a comedy and is made to entertain do not mean that it should be mediocre at best in quality. While it definitely has a target market, it’s difficult not to come to the conclusion that the only reason supposed blockbusters like this are made is because they are cash cows.<br /><br />“Gandarrapiddo: The Revenger Squad” is one of the eight films partaking in this year’s MMFF. Despite this, everyone can agree that the quintessential form of the Pinoy superhero remains to be Fernando Poe Jr.’s 1980 outing, and given Martin’s career trajectory seemingly trying to emulate “The King’s,” it makes sense that he gets a crack at one of his most iconic roles. Not just in terms of embodying the role, but also directing himself, just like Poe Jr. back in his day.<br /><div id="unruly-unit"></div><br />The best thing, however, that director Martin did with his version of “Ang Panday” is to put a contemporary flavor to it. Retreading the same story from the same origins story feels too redundant at this point. Presenting the new narrative as a continuation of the longstanding story opens up the lore in a way that the film does not film boxed by what its predecessors have set. Further, it gives the movie the ability to carve its own place in the string of “Ang Panday” films over the years. <br /><br />Unfortunately, “Ang Panday” does not offer something new in terms of cinematic storytelling. The tropes are too cliched just wrapped in a new way. Cuenca’s performance was convincing but is hindered by uncompelling motivations, leaving his iteration no different than other versions of the antagonist bar the fact that he makes Lizardo more stylish, making him scary in a different way. The attempt to modernize the story for a new generation of fans is commendable, but it fails short in terms of fully executing the narrative. Nonetheless, if you want a thrilling action-adventure flick, there are enough interesting plot points that make it worth your while in the cinemas.<br /><br />“Ang Panday” is one of the eight films partaking in MMFF 2017. Rey is off to Achc-To in search of the vanished, Luke Skywalker; the Resistance is on the run with the First Order hot on its tails while Finn is recuperating nicely on what looks like an improved version, albeit less cooler looking, Bacta tank. If anything, it’s a highly intellectual project that left so much to everyone’s personal interpretation. Johnson cracks the lore wide open with brand new things that we have never seen before but builds it nicely on top of the existing elements of the saga. This is actually a good thing as it broadens the mythos in ways that Lucasfilm can continue branching out in other narratives to keep the franchise from being stagnant. Johnson’s bold choices, while some are still unclear, is a good indication that the saga is evolving.<br /><div id="unruly-unit"></div><br />What’s interesting about this film is, separately, some of its moving parts are questionable. The Canto Bight sequence, for instance, did not hold that much ground to merit a huge chunk of the film’s time. But piecing everything together, all these elements perfectly fit with each other. It’s the the most ironic movie from the famed series -- having brilliant moments that are signature Star Wars tropes and yet, it’s also arguably the most anti-Star Wars offering from the franchise -- treading down a path that has never been explored before. We can only wonder How Johnson pulled it off in terms of writing and directing (more so, how oldtimers like Lawrence Kasdan felt about it). <br /><br />For diehards, there are a lot of callbacks and references that evoke certain kind of nostalgia. It perfectly wraps up certain storylines in a way that it’s difficult not to get a little bit emotional. Johnson served Luke’s story well, albeit in an unconventional way. This could prove to be divisive in the long run but Mark Hamill’s performance was a total success given how he is able to portray Luke's internal struggle given everything that he has been through. Cap that off with John Williams’ iconic score with Johnson’s aesthetics and it feels like it’s 1977 once again. <br /><br />Given everything that “The Force Awakens” did in terms of roping us back into the lore, it had its failures. “The Last Jedi” succeeded in acknowledging some of those including the much-hammered rehash argument. Unfortunately, it can only do so much, leaving other problematic parts of Episode VII and actually also falling into the same contraption. One of which is its inability to service each of its character in a fitting way. The overly-cute millennial type of love story just does not work with Cuneta and Padilla, not because they do not have any chemistry, but because it’s jarring that these two grown-ups act as if they are in their teens. The dialogs tend to be inappropriate, borderlining cringeworthy. And instead of developing a well-balanced story by highlighting the relationships of all the people across the board, “Unexpectedly Yours” focused its energy too much in making its veterans more like kids dabbling on the idea of first love.<br /><br />While the movie attempts to destigmatize mid-life crisis, it does it in an insensitive way. Patty’s weight and reaching menopausal stage were hammered way too much in the movie, to the point that despite being presented as humorous, it is almost a hurtful insult sugarcoated as a joke. The impact is no way diminished by having her acknowledge the same thing in a self-deprecating way, only made worse by her trying to act seductive all of a sudden. First, Garcia and Barreto once again prove that they have the acting chops to be worthy of being called actors. The two exudes chemistry despite not having much physical interaction. It’s such a shame that they were pushed aside, almost neglected, just to give way to their co-stars’ supposed love story.<br /><br />The second one is the superb dramatic scenes acted out by the cast, especially from Barretto and Cuneta. Their mother-daughter moments stood out in a way that they do not get over-the-top. No loud bawling, no screaming, no unending streaming down of tears, but audience can definitely feel the weight of their emotions just by looking at their faces. <br /><br />It’s hard to come to terms with the fact that despite great potential, “Unexpectedly Yours” misses the mark on several key points when it comes to rom-coms. Truly, it is not because Cuneta and Padilla can no longer work as a love-team given their age. If anything, Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta have proved that love stories are just for young adults. Over the years, the Disney subsidiary has been able to perfect the scheme of delivering heartwarming stories that caters not just to children but all demographics and “Coco” certainly follows heed with that tradition. First off, the movie is visually stunning, the graphics are majestic that you are easily immersed in the world that it is set in. While some were understandably skeptical about the incorporation of the skeletal manifestation of game players, it surprisingly handles it well that it is still kid-friendly and yet also interesting for older viewers. The backdrops are well-detailed made even better with the use of a wide spectrum of colors makes it look whimsical. Further, the film’s brilliant score and original songs add something to every scene, whether it’s an upbeat number or a an emotionally charged sequence.<br /><br />We always say that no movie is perfect, but “Coco” comes very close to that idea. It has a deep story enriched with Mexico’s culture and familial beats that does not alienate anyone. It tackles dreams and the question of what are you willing to give up to achieve those goals. Normally, inspirational movies like this is pretty much one-dimensional, only hammering us with the same message of not giving up over and over again. This movie, however, provides us with a different set of lens that could actually make as revisit our own stance when it comes to how far we are willing to go for our dreams. <br /><br />Despite the movie definitely having elements of mysticism and fantasy, its core story is very much rooted in reality, making it very relatable. The story is complex but not too much that kids could be lost in the narrative thread. “Coco” is peppered with heartwarming moments with Miguel and his family, not in a cheesy way, but in a way that mirrors our experiences with our own families. Aside from its aesthetics, there is also noticeable tone shift making Thor a lot less uptight-looking, perfectly encapsulating the levity the MCU films have always been known for.<br /><div id="unruly-unit"></div><br />The God of Thunder’s third solo outing will subject Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the rest of Asgard under its most dangerous and formidable foe in Hela (Cate Blanchett). As the Goddess of Death starts her take-over of the demigod’s home planet, he has to resort to his own capabilities, unfortunately, without the help of his trustee hammer, the Mjolnir, to save his kingdom and its people. The risk have and that is the good thing in terms of changing things up and trying new ways of storytelling to keep fans interested. Hemsworth himself said that it was a conscious decision on his part to offer something fresh to Thor’s followers. But it was not all fun and games, the film still needed to play within the Marvel sandbox and contribute to the narrative arc that the franchise has been treading since 2008’s “Iron Man.” The result is a hero’s journey to self-rediscovery with a perfect mix of comedic genius and MCU tropes.<br /><br />Despite valiant efforts to deviate from the norm, “Ragnarok” still suffers some of the franchise’s recurring problem, but its deemed acceptable due to the fact that folks behind it tried to course correct themselves via the movie. For instance, Marvel has always had villain problems, and while Hela is far from a multi-dimensional antagonist, she is a step-up from Thor’s old foes including the forgettable Malekith. Still, it would not have hurt for the film to shed a bit more of light regarding her motivations where people actually think twice if there is an angle that her actions can be justified.
