Joey de Leon draws flak for depression remark; Maine Mendoza earns praise for rebuttal

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">MANILA, Philippines – Actor and TV host Joey de Leon drew the ire of many after it made offensive remarks about depression as a mental illness. He called it “gawa-gawa lang” or made up and that there is a big difference between how the rich and poor experience it.<br /><br />De Leon’s remarks went viral and he even trended # 1 on Twitter Philippines on Thursday night. People are calling it callous and ignorant. Several shared their experiences on how depression destroyed their or their loved ones lives. But, everyone was pretty shocked at a joke called out by one if its hosts, Joey de Leon. In Eat Bulaga’s segment, “Juan for all, all for Juan’, the hosts Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola, Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza had discovered that the contestant they were interviewing is suffering from depression.<br /><div id="unruly-unit"></div><br />Maine commented,<i> “Hindi biro ‘yun ah, ‘yung depression.”</i> [Depression is not a joke]<br />She added, <i>“Hindi siya joke kasi maraming nakakaranas ng ganon, lalo na sa mga kabataan. Kaya dapat kapag may nakakaranas ng ganon, bigyan natin ng suporta.”</i> [It's not a joke because many people are experiencing it, especially the youth. So, if someone is depressed, we should support them.]<br /><br />Joey de Leon, who was in the studio listening to the interview, interrupted them and said, <i>“Hindi, huwag niyong suportahan, gawa-gawa lang niya ‘yun, pabayaan niyo…nagpapasosyal lang.” </i>[No, don’t support her. She just made it up. Let her be, she’s trying to be posh.]<br /><br />But de Leon didn’t stop there, he also added,<i> “Pag mayaman, depression. Pag mahirap, wala, wala ka nang pag-asa sa buhay.”</i> [When you’re rich, it’s called depression. Statistics would show that a close to 300 million people all over the world are suffering from it. The video featured scenes from the wedding preparation, the actual ceremony as well as the reception. <br /><br />In his Facebook post, Magbanua revealed that he and Luna first met during the wedding of  the brother of Ruby Rodriguez in Boracay in 2008. Although Luna was still single at that time, she told Magbanua that she would like him to film her future wedding after seeing the videographer’s creation.<br /><br />"I'm single, I'm with no one right now, but when it's time, I'd love for you to film my wedding,” Luna told Magbanua.<br /><br />Several years later, Luna asked Magbanua to cover her wedding shortly after she and Sotto announced their engagement.<br /><br />In their official wedding video, Sotto disclosed that he was used to having short relationships or flings in the past. However, Sotto said that it was great to have someone to call his spouse.<br /><br />Meanwhile, Luna said in her speech that a lot of people didn’t understand their relationship. Although theirs was not ideal, Luna described it as “genuine” and “unbreakable”.<br /><br />“You made me see that true love knows no age, no boundaries, beyond what the eyes can see, that true love is felt,” Luna said.<br /><br />“Remember from this day on, we are one. I will hold your hand through this whole journey and I will not let go. Thank you and I love you,” she added.<br /><br />Sotto, who is 35 years older than Luna, first confirmed their relationship in December 2013. "This further dropped to 3.3 million on December 19 and finally to 2.65 million on December 26," he said.<br /><br />The observation on Eat Bulaga's rating drop was based on Kantar Media Philippines data. He further said that the decline in audience share being experienced by Eat Bulaga "Kalyeserye" can be attributed to two factors: Maine was able to finally meet Alden in person during the "Tamang Panahon" concert and she lost her mysterious quality since viewers were able to hear her real voice.<br /><br /><br /><b>AGB Nielsen data shows declining TV ratings of Eat Bulaga in Mega Manila</b><br /><br />In span of six months of AlDub dominance, Eat Bulaga was able to get as high as 50.8% of ratings for the "Tamang Panahon" event at the Philippine Arena. It's Showtime on that period registered a TV rating of 5.4% only in Mega Manila.<br /><br />However, a big decline in TV ratings were observed in December 2015 on which Eat Bulaga's weekday ratings were on 23+ up range.
