Since the said hospital was the nearest medical facility to their village, Del Rosario’s father together with their driver/neighbor brought Del Rosario’s mother there.<br /><br />After seeing the result of his mother’s ECG test, the doctor advised to have her transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for a closer observation. His father was then instructed to go to the admission window where he was required to pay a downpayment of P40,000.<br /><br />Unfortunately, Del Rosario’s father only had P10,000 at that time and would have to go home to get extra cash. Aware that his wife was in critical condition, Del Rosario’s father asked the admission staff to accept his money and promised to settle the balance as soon as possible by returning home to get extra cash. <br /><br />“In fact, he just asked that my mother be given urgent medical attention and he could settle the rest of the "required downpayment" later, considering that my father has the capacity to pay,” Del Rosario write.<br /><br />Sadly, the staff did not grant the request of Del Rosario’s father and refused to admit the patient to the ICU. According to the staff, they were following the hospital’s protocol: “no downpayment, no admission.”<br /><br />Furthermore, the attending doctor also echoed the remarks of the admission staff and even advised Del Rosario’s father to transfer the patient to a public hospital or a charity ward of another private hospital.<br /><br />The doctor allegedly told Del Rosari’s father: <i>“Hindi naman ho sa minamata ko kayo ha, kakayanin niyo ho ba magbayad?”</i><br /><br />(We’re not discriminating you, but do you have the capacity to pay?)<br /><br />Del Rosario’s father had no choice but to take his wife out of the hospital since the doctor also refused to let the former leave the patient at the hospital. Ong, a cardiologist, has validated a report that a Filipino has been infected with the virus that has swept Latin America including Honduras.<br /><br />“Na-confirm nga na positive for Zika itong pasyente at sa mismong ospital ay gumaling naman. Ngayon ay nasa bahay na ang pasyente,” Dr. Ong told ABS-CBN News.<br /><br />(The patient tested positive for Zika and has recovered in the hospital. Currently, the patient is home.)<br /><br />Dr. Ong added that he is concerned since the relatives who took care of the patient will be returning to the Philippines.<br /><br />Although the Philippines is still free from the Zika virus according to the Department of Health (DOH), the government agency doesn’t have the capacity to test passengers coming from countries with Zika virus. Currently, the DOH has only 1,000 testing kits since supplies are limited all over the world.<br /><br />“Most important is hindi ka makagat ng lamok para walang kakayahan na masalin o lumipat yung sakit na Zika,”said DOH spokesperson Dr. Lyndon Lee Suy.<br /><br />(What’s important is you won’t be bitten by the mosquito so that there’s no possibility that the disease will transmitted.)<br /><br />Zika virus, which is carried by Aedes aegypti mosquito, causes symptoms such as fever, rashes, body pain and conjunctivitis. It has been linked to the rise of babies born with microcephaly, a congenital condition in which the brain of the baby does not become fully developed.<br /><br />Health experts suggest the following measures:<br /><br />1. Observe yourself.<br />2. Wear long sleeves and pants.<br />3. Put anti-mosquito lotion. <br />4.
