MANILA, Philippines - Nonito Donaire Jr decided to give back to those in need and donated 100 houses to typhoon victims in Iloilo.
In a Facebook post, the boxing champ shared that he and his wife flew to Iloilo this week to turnover the 100 houses they donated. Donaire Jr had always aspired to make a difference and encouraged other athletes to do so.
The Filipino Flash urged athletes to have a voice. He said, “In boxing, fighters aren’t just fighters. We can do so much more beyond inspiring people with what we achieve in the ring.”
Build a House, Build a Home project
When typhoon Yolanda hit the country in 2013, Iloilo was one of the severely devastated areas. A lot of people lost their loved ones, homes, properties and livelihood.
Two years after Yolanda, English philanthropist Greg Secker saw the need to help in the rebuilding of Iloilo. He founded the Build a House, Build a Home project in Iloilo. It was through this foundation that Donaire was able to make one of his dreams a reality. He said, “I’m looking at the bigger picture, what we can do to create more homes for the less fortunate, maybe 1,000 more homes, how we can make an impact on the lives of people.”
Not the first time
This is not the first time that the former boxing champion had given back to those in need. Back in 2009 at the start of his career, he donated P1 million to the victims of Typhoon Ondoy to help build houses.
