In a time when Mr. Right seems impossible to find, women all over the world are finding that being alone doesn’t mean being lonely. A trend that is sweeping among women is called, sologamy, where women decide to marry themselves. Women dress up, invite their friends and families to a party where they celebrate a non-binding “wedding” to themselves. Women call these ceremonies as “liberating” and independence from men and society’s views on marriage. On the other hand, others have called these narcissistic and nonsense.
These women all over the world are happily saying “I do” to themselves.
1. Laura Mesi of Italy - Laura is a 40-year-old personal trainer who got tired of people asking her why she’s single. So, she donned a white gown, had a 3-tier white cake, had bridesmaids and around 70 of her friends and family to celebrate her “wedding” with herself. She said, “I firmly believe that each of us must first of all love ourselves. “You can have a fairy tale even without the prince."
2. Linda Baker of US - This was way back in 1993, Linda was also 40 years old when she decided that she marry herself. Linda shared, “It’s about doing things for yourself and not waiting around for someone else to make it happen.”
3. Lynne Gollogy from US - On her 40th birthday, she decided to have an all-white wedding for herself. She even booked a honeymoon alone at Rome. Lynne said, “You know, I've had a lot of potentials in the past, but I'm not just going to settle for anyone just so I fit into today's society.”
4. Jennifer Hoes of Netherlands - Back in 2003, Jennifer married herself at the age of 30. She was an artist back then and became a tabloid star when she wore a wedding gown full of 200 latex copies of her nipples. She also shared that she had the best wedding night because she had a sound sleep by herself.
5. Erika Anderson of US - Erika was 37 years old when she made a vow with herself in Brooklyn, New York. Erika is a proud sologamist who said, “I would describe it as women saying yes to themselves. It means that we are enough, even if we are not partnered with someone else.”
Again, these self-marriages are not legally binding. So, these women are still free to get married with someone if the time comes.
Do you agree that this trend is a celebration of self-love or is this being a bit selfish?
