MANILA, Philippines - The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) through the Office of the President declared September 21, 2017 (Thursday) a Muslim Legal Holiday for the celebration of Amun Jadid or Islamic New Year in selected areas of Mindanao.

Based on Presidential Decree No. 1083 otherwise known as Code of Muslim Personal Laws of the Philippines, September 21 corresponds to Muharram 1, 1439 Hijra (first day of Hijri year 1439).

Article 170 stated that this Muslim holiday shall be observed in the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur and in the Cities of Cotabato, Iligan, Marawi, Pagadian and Zamboanga and in such other Muslim provinces and cities as may hereafter be created.

"Upon proclamation by the President of the Philippines, Muslim Holidays may also be officially observed in other provinces and cities."

Article 172 further said that “All Muslim government officials and employees in places other than those enumerated under Article 170 shall also be excused from reporting to office in order that they may be able to observe Muslim Holidays."

"The President of the Philippines may, by proclamation, require private offices, agencies or establishments to excuse their Muslim employees from reporting for work during the Muslim holiday without reduction in their usual compensation," P.D. No. 1083 added.

Muslim holiday new year 2017

Known as the Hijra, the migration from Mecca to Medina, marked the beginning of the Islamic era, or 1AH, in 622AD.

The first day of the year is observed on the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar.
