MANILA, Philippines - The performance of teacher education institutions (TEIs) in the Licensure Exam for Teachers (LET) has generally improved in 2014, the Philippine Business for Education (PBED) announced recently.
There are approximately 1,200 TEIs in the country. PBED study reveals that more than half of them still have more than 50% of their graduates fail the LET. Furthermore, the performance of TEIs with less than 20% test-taker passing rate in the Secondary LET continues to worsen.
More passers in 2014 exams
The percentage of first time takers and repeaters who have passed in 2014 examinations is higher than the combined average for 2009-2013. However, the contrary happened in the 2014 Secondary LET overall takers, which slightly decreased by 1%. This means that more repeaters are repeating the Secondary teachers board exam.
Poor Performers in the LET
An alarming number of TEIs in the country still perform poorly in the LET; 537 TEIs offering elementary and 774 TEIs offering secondary teacher education are below the average national test-taker passing rate of 2014.
In terms of regional performance in the LET from 2009 to 2014, Regions 4B, 9, 12, 13, and ARMM have the highest percentage of poor performing TEIs relative to the total number of TEIs in their regions.
Worse and Worst Performing Education Schools
Along with the poor performers are the “worse” performers or TEIs that only have 20% of their students pass the LET. They are now fewer in the Elementary LET compared to 2009-2013 while the opposite happened in the Secondary LET.
Additionally, the “worst” performers or TEIs which have less than 20% of their students pass the LET from 2009 to 2014 for both Elementary and Secondary Education are:
Top Performing Schools for LET
The top performers that have more than 80% of their graduates pass the LET from 2009-2014 for both Elementary and Secondary Education are the following:
1. De La Salle University (DLSU) – Manila - 99%
2. University of the Philippines (UP)– Diliman - 97%
3. University of Santo Tomas (UST) - 94%
4. Philippine Normal University (PNU) – Manila - 93%
5. Xavier University(XU) - 90%
6. Silliman University (SU) - 90%
7. Saint Louis University(SLU) - 87%
8. University of Saint La Salle (USLS) - 86%
9. Bohol Island State University (BISU) – Tagbilaran - 85%
9. Ateneo de Naga University (ADNU) - 85%
9. University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) – Tagum - 85%
10. Saint Bridget’s College (SBC) - 84%

The research results of PBED show that only those in the borderlines between poor, average, and good performers increased their performance. While the worse (20% and below) performers, especially in the secondary LET, continue to decrease every year.
