PHIVOLCS latest update on Mayon Volcano: Alert level 3

MANILA, Philippines - For the past 24 hours, Mayon Volcano’s eruptive activity has been characterized by “quiet lava effusion from a new summit lava dome, lava flow down the Miisi and Bonga Gullies and lava collapse events,” the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) - DOST announced in its 8:00 a.m. update on Tuesday, January 16.

Tremors and lava fountaining have been noted. A total of 9 episodes of tremor, four of which accompanied short-duration lava fountaining, and 75 lava collapse events.

As of 8:00 a.m on Tuesday, Mayon Volcano is still at alert level 3. It means that there is “relatively high level of unrest as magma is at the crater and hazardous eruption is possible within weeks or even days.”

The authorities continue to give a stern warning to the public to avoid entering 6 kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and the 7-km Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southern flanks “due to the danger of rockfalls, landslides and sudden explosions or dome collapse that may generate hazardous volcanic flows.”

The public is also warned to be vigilant against pyroclastic density currents or “uson,” lahars and sediment-laden streamflows along channels.

Aircrafts are also prohibited to fly close to the volcano’s summit as “ash from any sudden eruption” will be dangerous.

Ash fall events may likely occur on the southwest side of the volcano.

The heartwarming moment was captured by Anthony Enriquez and the touching videos had gone viral. The OFW worked in the Middle East and took care of her employer’s entire family from their children to their grandchildren. One by one, the family members hugged and thanked their beloved househelp. All of them were in tears as they said their final goodbyes to the woman who took great care of them for years.

The OFW, now being assisted in a wheelchair also couldn’t help but be tearful as she thanked her employer who she had treated as family. She is now ready to go back home and be welcomed by the family she left for a long time.

The story became viral because we often hear stories of abuses from our OFW in the Middle East. Heartwarming stories like this are rare that netizens couldn’t help but be impressed with the kindness of the employer and the dedication of the Filipina.

Just like any OFW who sacrifice so much to give their family a good life, this OFW is a true hero.

Mabuhay ka, nanay!

SEC orders closure of online news site Rappler

MANILA, Philippines - The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revokes license of online news site Rappler for alleged violation of foreign ownership restrictions, the company confirmed on Monday, January 15.

SEC orders closure of online news site Rappler

SEC said Rappler violated constitutional restrictions on ownership and control of mass media entities because of funds coming Omidyar Network, a fund created by eBay founder and entrepreneur Pierre Omidyar.

"(t)he ownership and management of mass media shall be limited to citizens of the Philippines, or to corporations, cooperatives or associations, wholly-owned and managed by such citizens," statement from SEC decision reads.

Here's the full 29-page document detailing the SEC decision:

Rappler meanwhile said the commission approved the deal with Omidyar in 2015.

"What this means for you, and for us, is that the Commission is ordering us to close shop, to cease telling you stories, to stop speaking truth to power, and to let go of everything that we have built – and created – with you since 2012," the news site said in a statement.

During the SONA of President Rodrigo Duterte in July last year, the highest official threatened to investigate the ownership of Rappler. The company has debunked the allegation and claimed that foreign investors, Omidyar Network and North Base Media, do not own Rappler.

Statement from MalacaƱang

"The Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) is empowered to determine the legality of corporations.

"We respect the SEC decision that Rappler contravenes the strict requirements of the the law that the ownership and the management of mass media entities must be wholly-owned by Filipinos.

"Rappler may wish to exhaust all available legal remedies until the decision becomes final."

Netizens react

As the company asks to stand with them, supporters and followers pour their views on social media.

A Catholic church in Malabon is under fire after a story of how one of its lay ministers “denied” communion to a homeless man went viral on Facebook.

Triste explained that during the Holy Communion, a homeless man let everyone to fall in line ahead of him but was allegedly refused to be given the sacred host. He said, “This homeless man patiently waited to receive the holy communion, but when his time comes, he was neglected by the lay minister.”

Triste felt so frustrated about witnessing the scene that he called the attention of the usher who simple replied, “‘Di namin siya napansin.”

Triste reasoned that it was “very impossible because he fell in line and they saw him.”

After the mass, Triste still couldn’t let go of the seemingly bad feeling that he went up to the priest and told him about the incident. Triste was expecting for the Priest to be apologetic but was surprised when he nonchalantly answered, “Sabihin mo ‘wag sya magtatampo, next time dalawa ibibigay ko sa kanya.”

The viral story caused the netizens to call out Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) for the seemingly insensitive remark of the priest and the alleged discrimination of the church towards the poor and needy. Triste captioned his post with the meaningful hashtags #notodiscrimination #Jesusisforall.
