Gilas Pilipinas prevents upset, survives Thailand 81-74 in SEA Games 2017

MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas survived Tyler Lamb and the rest of Team Thailand, 81-74 as the national team opened their Southeast Asian (SEA) Games campaign on Sunday, August 20, 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Gilas Pilipinas faced its toughest rival in the 29th SEA Games right at its very first game against Thailand. The Thais, bolstered by ABL superstar Tyler Lamb, looked tougher and sharper in paper at least with an ultimate goal to dethrone SEA powerhouse, Philippines.

Basketball analysts say that Philippines has already found its match with Tyler Lamb on Thailand’s roster. But the Thai-American stalwart started cold until he finally found his rhythm after half-a-quarter for 5 quick points.

Philippines’ guards led by Baser Amer together with Almon Vosotros and Mike Tolomia kept Philippines’ decent scoring distance by firing from the three point territory.

Battered and bruised Fil-German Christian Standhardinger who flew straight to Malaysia from FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon entered the floor in the latter phase of the opening period to fortify the frontcourt and solidify Philippines’ scoring advantage. Standhardinger helped the team posted a double-digit lead after the first ten minutes of the game, 22-12.

2nd quarter didn’t go as planned for Team Philippines as the nationals were outrebounded defensively by the Thais.

Midway of the second, the crowd went frenzy as Kobe Paras checked-in. The arena was filled by “Kobe, Kobe” chant and even got louder as the young Paras made an emphatic block as he announced his entry.

Thailand immediately recovered and managed to cut the lead from as high as 13 to just 6 points. Tyler Lamb however got cold again and missed multiple shot attempts. Bobby Parks Jr. made it harder for Lamb to hold the ball and put some terrific stoppages on the Thai.

Ananti’s long shot and put back stole the lead from Philippines and shifted the momentum to Thailand. Christian Standhardinger’s charities from the line however promptly snatched the advantage back from the Thais until the end of the 1st half, 36-34.

Kiefer Ravena and Troy Rosario opened up the 2nd half strong for Philippines. Likewise, Tyler Lamb started to connect from all angles that gave Thailand the lead once again, 46-45 with 4:30 remaining in the third.

Both teams’ big men battled it all out during the dying minutes of the 3rd period. Troy Rosario went toe-to-toe against Thailand’s Klahan under the rim.

Philippines hung on a 1-point 60-59 as the third canto wrapped-up.

Rebounding was still Gilas Pilipinas’ problem as the final quarter unfolded plus poor free throw shooting. Standhardinger alone missed 6 straight foul shots that could have given Philippines a better margin. Tyler Lamb tied the game anew, 62 all with over 7 minutes left in the ball game.

Tyler Lamb’s superb basketball performance came to an end as he obtained his 5th and last personal foul after hacking Bobby Ray Parks. Jr. off a turnover. Lamb posted a game high 17 markers prior to fouling out.

Thailand held the lead for over 5 minutes of the game until Bobby Ray Parks. Jr and Kiefer Ravena completed their free throws off excellent defensive stops. 73-71 in favor of Gilas Pilipinas with under 3:23 left in the game.

Christian Standhardinger delivered the insurance basket for Philippines 79-74 with 40 ticks remaining in the ballgame. The Fil-German added 1 more to close the game 81-74 for the first win of the tournament.

Gilas’ next assignment will be Myanmar on Tuesday, August 22 at 6:30PM.

Nikko Huelgas wins 2nd gold for the Philippines at SEA Games 2017

MANILA, Philippines - Triathlete Nikko Huelgas brings honor for the Philippines anew as he won the country's second gold at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on Monday, August 21, in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

Huelgas ruled the men's triathlon to defend his title clocking one hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds, an improvement from his 2:04:32 in 2015.

Meanwhile, another Filipino athlete John Chicano took the silver medal with a time of 2:03:24.

Singapore bagged the third place.

Philippines now improved its medal haul to 7.

Mary Joy Tabal was responsible for the country's first gold medal as she dominated the women's marathon on Saturday.

Host nation Malaysia is leading the medal tally with 16 gold, 13 silver and 9 bronze for a total of 38 medals. It was followed by Singapore having 8 gold, 10 silver and 8 bronze or 26 combined medals.

Senate majority to probe Kian Loyd Delos Santos’ death

MANILA, Philippines - Members of the Senate majority have condemned the killing of Kian Loyd Delos Santos, a 17-year-old student who is the latest victim of police anti-drug operation in Caloocan City.

On Sunday, August 20, allies of President Rodrigo Duterte signed a resolution seeking an investigation into alleged lapses of members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in their operations resulting to the killing of Kian.

Except for Senator Manny Pacquiao, all majority senators have signed the resolution including Senators Francis Escudero and Nancy Binay who were not present at the caucus.

According to Senator Joel Villanueva, the senators agreed to task the Committee on Public Order headed by Senator Panfilo Lacson to probe the recent spate of police abuses as well as the death of Kian.

“In conducting the campaign of the Duterte administration against illegal drugs, the government must always ensure that no innocent lives are unnecessarily lost and that those within the ranks of the police or any government agency should be held fully accountable for any crime or offense,” the resolution reads.

Meanwhile, minority senators have also expressed their intention to probe the drug killings.

On Wednesday, August 16, Kian was killed during a police operation in Barangay 160. According to the police, Kian resisted authorities and apparently fired at them. However, witnesses claim and several CCTV footages showed that Kian was unarmed and was pleading for his life.

The police also alleged that two sachets of shabu and a caliber .45 was found in Kian’s possession.

On Sunday, August 20, PNP Chief Ronald dela Rosa claimed that Kian was a drug courier for his own father and some of his uncles. Although he was dismayed with the outcome of the operation, Dela Rosa insisted that the operation itself was legitimate since there was basis for allegations that Kian was involved in illegal drug trade.

"Si Kian ay ginagamit ng kanyang ama. Ang ama niya mismo ang user, mga uncle ang mga pusher diyan at ginagamit si Kian na courier. Kaya nag-surface ang pangalan niya sa area mismo," Bato told ABS-CBN News.

To disprove Dela Rosa’s allegations, Kian’s family said they are willing to undergo drug tests.

MANILA, Philippines - 'Bagyong Isang' (international name: Hato) has maintained its strength, speed and direction as it moves in the general direction of extreme Northern Luzon, state weather bureau PAGASA announced in its 5:00 p.m. bulletin on Monday, August 21.

PAGASA said this weather system will enhance the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) which may bring light to moderate with possible occasionally heavy rains over Metro Manila, Ilocos, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Bicol, and Visayas.

At 4:00 p.m. today, the center of Tropical Storm "Isang" was estimated based on all available data at 170 km East of Basco, Batanes (20.5 °N, 123.6 °E).

"Isang" has maximum sustained winds of 80 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 97 kph. It is forecast to move West Northwest at 15 kph.

The estimated rainfall amount is from moderate to occasionally heavy rains within the 400 km diameter of the Tropical Storm.

PAGASA said that 'Bagyong Isang' is closest to Batanes group of islands tonight or tomorrow (August 22) early morning.

Is Kian really innocent?

MANILA, Philippines - The brutal killing of 17-year-old Kian Loyd Delos Santos has prompted the Senate majority to probe the recent spate of killings in anti-illegal drugs operations carried out by the Philippine National Police (PNP). Kian, a Grade 11 student, is believed to be totally innocent and have been planted P16,000 worth of drugs by the police.

But is Kian really innocent as claimed by his family and friends? Did he really have nothing to do with the illegal drug trade? Was he just another collateral damage in President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on illegal drugs?

PNP Chief Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa claims they have enough evidence to prove that Kian wasn’t really innocent. In a statement he made on Sunday, August 20, Dela Rosa said Kian served as drug courier for his father and several uncles, based on the information from the chief of the Caloocan City police.

A drug suspect-turned police witness Renato Loberas also claimed that he personally transacted with Kian.

In his interview with GMA News, Loberas said: “Abutan lang po. 'Pag na-contact ko na po sa cellphone 'yung Neneng, si Kian na po ang mag-aabang sa akin sa kanto.”

"Salubong lang po, daan lang po, kaliwaan lang po, diretso na. Alam ko pong menor de edad po, sa itsura po niya, sir... 'tsaka tipong ganoon lang po kami, daan lang, wala nang usap-usap," he added.

Meanwhile, Caloocan City prosecutor Darwin Cañete does not think Kian is totally innocent.

“I am not saying they did not kill the kid. The (police) should be held accountable if ever it’s a proven EJK (extrajudicial killing). But making the kid super innocent? I am not buying it,” Cañete told Inquirer.

“EJKs are wrong, and if proven, the (police) should be punished. But use facts, not emotions,” Cañete added.

WATCH: BFF’s faces botched due to petroleum injectable fillers

MANILA, Philippines - Instead of enhancing their looks, three friends from Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte ended up having botched faces after getting dirt cheap “fillers” injected on their faces.

Just like many transwomen, Alvina Bernardes, Maui Cababao, and Nina Lavadia dreamed of having a face that could launch a thousand ships. However, they didn’t have enough money to afford expensive treatments by licensed doctors which cost around P20,000 to P50,000.

In 2009, a certain Janet offered to give Alvina cheek enhancement for only P500. Since the price was only a portion of the usual price, Alvina decided to avail of her services.

“Inanyayahan kami na “gusto niyo ba magpaganda na mura lang?” Na-curious ako sa sarili ko. P500 daw ang babayaran,” Alvina told Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho.

However, instead of using the usual fillers used by doctors, Janet apparently used melted petroleum jelly. She injected it on Alvina’s cheeks, nose and chin. For the first few months, Alvina was satisfied with the result of her treatment.

After seeing how the treatment enhanced their friend’s looks, Maui and Nina also availed of Janet’s services. However, the real effect of the cheap injectable filler started showing its effects after six months.

“Mabigat tas parang ang init kasi petroleum jelly” Pag ganun nang pisngi, bagong ligo ka, ang init. Parang nag-react yung petroleum so makikita mo talaga nag-pula siya,” Maui recounted.

Not only were they negatively affected by the cheap treatment, even their families suffered the consequences of their wrong decision.

Nina’s mom Teresita, who wasn’t aware that her son is gay, had difficulty accepting what happened to Nina’s face. But instead of driving away her daughter, she decided to support her by giving her their family’s savings intended for the renovation of their house.

“Kasi mahal yung opera umabot ata P100,000 ata yun. Para sa bahay namen na naipon wala. Para lang makita na maayos sana ang mukha niya,” Teresita said.

Meanwhile, despite the painful comments they get from people, Alvina remains positive and continues joining beauty pageants.

“Positive lang ako sa lahat. Kahit ganito meron naman kasing mga taong nakakaintindi din saken. Sabi nga nila proud sila saken kasi nakakaya ko humarap sa kanila. Nakakaya ko pa din sumali,” Alvina said.

Dr. Henry Claraval, a facial plastic surgeon, warned against treatments using petroleum jelly as fillers. He advised patients to have their faces enhanced by licensed doctors in clinics.

“Pag ka makita niyo sa kanyang lalagyan nakalagay for external use only at hindi ito dapat iniinject sa mukha ng isang tao dahil lubha itong delikado. Hindi ito tinatanggap ng ating katawan at kadalasan ang katawan naten ay kino-consider ito na isang foreign body,” Dr. Claraval explained.

Fortunately, good samaritans reached out to help raise funds for the corrective surgeries of the transwomen. With support from netizens, Alvina, Maui and Nina were brought to Manila and underwent surgery at RZQ The Aesthetic Surgery Clinic.

Currently, the three are still recovering from their surgeries. It would take months before the results of their operations can be seen.

Philippines claims 6 golds in 2017 SEA Games

The Philippines will take home 6 golds from the 29th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as of 4:30 pm on Tuesday, August 22.

Marathoner Mary Joy Tabal delivered the first gold for the country on the morning of the SEA Games' official opening day, Saturday, August 19. Tabal, who trained in Tuscany, Italy, clocked 2:48:26 beating Hoang Thi Thanh of Vietnam by 7 minutes and Natthaya Thanaronnawat of Thailand by 10 minutes.

In her interview with Rappler, Tabal said in Tagalog: "At the last loop, I hardly could move my legs because of the excitement but I controlled it because I did not want to disappoint our country. I was thinking I want to give what the Filipinos are expecting me to give.”

On Tuesday, August 22, the Philippine Gymnastics team added two golds to the country’s haul. Reyland Capellan, 2015 SEA Games gold medalist, successfully retained his title and bagged the Philippines’ fourth gold in men’s artistic gymnastics floor exercise. He garnered 13.950 points beating Zul Bahrin Sin Mat of Malaysia with 13.750 points and Tikumporn Surintornta of Thailand with 13.600 points.

Call center agent with CKD warns about unhealthy lifestyle in BPO industry

If you are among the 1.3 million-strong business process outsourcing (BPO) workforce in the Philippines, you should pay more attention to your health as you are more prone to certain diseases such as chronic kidney disease (CKD).

That’s according to a Facebook post by a call center agent recently diagnosed with CKD. Such condition is characterized by gradual loss of kidney function over time that may lead to permanent kidney failure.

In the viral post shared on the Facebook page Buhay Call Center Agent, the female call center agent revealed that she has decided to leave the BPO industry after 8 years for health reasons. She revealed how the unhealthy lifestyle of most BPO employees can compromise their health.

The unnamed call center agent said BPO employees should refrain from consuming beverages commonly drank by agents such as coffee, soft drinks, energy drinks, alcohol as well as supplements. She also advised agents to urinate if they need to and for team leaders, managers and work force to allow their agents to take a bio break.

Moreover, the call center agent encouraged other agents to see a doctor rather than self-medicate.

According to her doctor, BPO employees are more prone to this disease because of their unhealthy lifestyle.

Towards the end of her post, she advised BPO employees not to take their health for granted.

“Pero beshie, iba pala talaga pag nandun ka na sa situation.... Last Wed lang ako nadiagnosed. Akala ko simpleng ubo at sakit sa likod lang eh....
Ayun lang.... Basta mga peepz ingatan ang health lalo na ito talaga puhunan natin,” she wrote in her post.

MANILA, Philippines - Due to continuous monsoon rains and thunderstorms, several local goverment units and schools are expected to announce class suspensions for today, August 23, 2017.

While 'Bagyong Isang' left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday afternoon, state weather bureau PAGASA said the weather system will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon or habagat. It may bring light up to heavy rains over Luzon and Western Visayas, particularly the provinces of Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, and Mindoro.

Based on automatic class suspension guideline, LGUs have the authority to declare local suspensions in areas where there is no storm signal.

Good weather in Metro Manila and Luzon can be expected on Thursday, PAGASA weather forecaster Chris Perez said.

FULL RESULTS: August 2017 Nutritionist Dietitian board exam passers list

MANILA, Philippines - The August 2017 Nutritionist Dietitian board exam results, which include the full list of passers, top 10 (topnotchers), top performing schools and performance of schools are officially released online on Wednesday, August 23 or in two (2) working days after the exam.

PRC administered the Nutritionist-Dietitian licensure exam on August 20 and 21 in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Davao and Zamboanga.

REGISTRATION OF PASSERS AND OATHTAKING

According to PRC, registration for the issuance of Professional Identification Card (ID) and Certificate of Registration will be done on-line. Please go to www.prc.gov.ph and follow instructions for initial registration.

Those who will register are required to bring the following:

• Notice of admission
• duly accomplished Oath Form or Panunumpa ng Propesyonal
• 2 pieces passport size pictures (colored with white background and complete name tag)
• 2 sets of documentary stamps

PRC advised that successful examinees should personally register and sign in the Roster of Registered Professionals.

The date and venue for the oathtaking ceremony of the new successful examinees in the said examination WILL BE ANNOUNCED LATER.

VERIFICATION OF RATINGS

Nutritionist Dietitian board exam verification of ratings (passers, non-passers and removal) can be done online.

Visit PRC's "Verification of Rating" service and enter the required information to verify your identity. Note that this will be available in few working days after the release of results.

COVERAGE OF EXAMINATION

The two-day exams covered nutritional biochemistry and clinical dietitics (35%) and community and public health (30%) on Day 1; and another 35% for foods and food service systems on the second day.

RATINGS IN THE EXAMINATIONS

PRC said that to pass the examinations, a candidate must obtain an average of 70%, with no rating below 50% in any subject: Provided, that an applicant who fails to obtain a passing average but who obtained at least seventy percent in each of at least one-half of the total subjects given in the examinations, may be permitted to take within one (1) year from the date of his examination, another examination, on the subjects in which he obtained a grade below seventy percent.

Should the examinee fail in the set of subjects repeated in the second examinations, he/she shall be required to take all the subjects in the next examinations, PRC said.

RELEASE OF EXAM RESULTS

The March 2017 Nutritionist Dietitian board exam results were released after two (2) working days. A total of 755 out of 1,047 passed the exams.

In August 2015 exam, PRC has released results in 2 working days after the tests. A total of 705 out of 1,089 passed with University of the Philippines (UP) - Los Banos grad topped the exam.

During the July 2014 licensure exam, results were released online also in 2 working days. PRC named 634 out of 997 who have passed the exam. UP-Diliman alum managed to get the highest place.

According to PRC Resolution No. 2016-1019, which deals with the 'Schedule of Licensure Examinations for Year 2017', the target release date of results for the recent Nutritionist-Dietitian board exam is on Wednesday, August 23 or in two (2) working days after the exam.
