MANILA, Philippines- A 35-year-old Filipino construction worker identified as Joselito Lidasan Zapanta was executed on Tuesday, December 29 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after being convicted of murder with robbery.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Zapanta was sentenced to death after the family of the Sudanese victim, Imam Ibrahim, refused to give an “Affidavit of Forgiveness or Tanazul in exchange of blood money”. It was reported that the crime committed in April 2010 originated from a rental dispute.
DFA spokesperson Charles Jose told Rappler in a text message: “The Philippine government has undertaken and exhausted all diplomatic and legal efforts, and extended consular and legal assistance to preserve the life of Mr Zapanta. The Philippine government provided the late Mr Zapanta all necessary assistance and ensured that his legal rights were observed throughout the whole judicial process.”
From November 28 to December 2, in March 2013 and in November 2012, the government “arranged and funded the jail visits” of Zapanta’s mother and sister to the Malaz Central Prison.
Zapanta’s family including his father, mother, sister and two children will continue to receive assistance from the government.
Zapanta’s remains will not be repatriated
In an interview with radio dzBB, Jose revealed that Zapanta’s body was immediately buried following the execution as it is a common practice of the Saudi government. Zapanta had converted to Islam years ago and such practice is also in accordance with the Islam burial tradition.
Although the DFA informed Zapanta’s family that he could be executed anytime, the Philippine government was not informed about the exact date and time of the convicted Filipino’s execution.
A report by dzBB divulged that the government failed to raise the P48 million blood money demanded by the Riyadh court in order to save Zapanta’s life. Last December 16, Mona, Zapanta’s mother, made an appeal for help from the public as they have raised P23 million for the blood money. - Mini/TheSummitExpress

PNP said these firecrackers violated safety standards under Republic Act 7183.
The Department of Health (DOH) strongly advised parents not to allow children to use firecrackers during the holiday season, especially in welcoming the New Year. DOH reiterates the risks of injuries brought about by unsafe use of fireworks and firecrackers.
MANILA, Philippines - Sharing the dreams of parents and Filipino families of a "drug-free Philippines", the tandem of presidential aspirant Davao City Mayor Rodrigo "Rody" Duterte and Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano is eyeing on taking down half of the 3-5 thousand drug lords in the country through an "all-out war against drugs."

Speaking in his Sunday television program, Gikan sa masa, para sa masa, Duterte said the drug problem in the country has worsened to such a degree that it has become a threat to national security.
"In some places in the country, the drug menace has become so bad that drug users have resorted to paying for drugs not with cash but with goats and livestock," Duterte said.
The tough-talking mayor said he will not hesitate to use the military and the police and exercise the extraordinary powers of the president to stop the country's drug problem. "In three to six months, everything has to stop. Corruption, drug, criminality. You are oppressing the Filipinos, and I hate it," Duterte said, referring to criminals.
For his part, Cayetano said they have a comprehensive plan and stategy as well as the political will to win the war against drugs. Part of the strategy is the dual task of disciplining and improving the salaries and benefits of the police/Law enforcers.
"Under a Duterte-Cayetano government, minimum take home pay for law enforcers will be at P 50-60 thousand plus allowances. We will also impose harsh punishment for 'banta salakay' law enforcers. We will leave no excuses for corruption nor sleeping on the job," Cayetano said.
Cayetano said they received reports that big drug syndicates based in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao have linked up to put up a united front against their electoral campaign.
"We will not be cowed. We will hit them where it hurts the most. We will strike at the belly of the beast. We will bring the war to their doorsteps," Cayetano quoting Duterte.
"For the sake of our families' safety and the future of our children, Mayor Duterte and I will end this social menace. Hindi na pwede ang pateka teka. Sawa na tayo sa pamedya medya. Panahon na para sa matapang na solusyon at mabilis na aksyon laban sa salot na droga sa ating bansa. To our growing supporters, stay calm. Change is coming," Cayetano ended.
Before Duterte entered the political picture, the issue of illegal drugs was not in the front and center of the electoral agenda. With Duterte running as President many look forward to him to end the country's growing drug problem.
MANILA, Philippines - The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday, December 28, issued two temporary restraining orders (TROs) against the ruling of Commission on Elections (COMELEC) cancelling Certificate of Candidacy of presidential aspirant Grace Poe for the May 2016 elections.

"A temporary restraining order is issued, effective immediately and until further orders from this court, ordering you, respondent Comelec, your agents, representatives or persons acting in your place or stead, to cease and desist from implementing the assailed Comelec en banc resolution dated December 23, 2015," SC said.

The petition for certiorari with prayer for the issuance of a temporary restraining order (TRO) on the poll body's ruling was filed by Poe's lawyer, George Garcia also on Monday.
"The Supreme Court has the sole authority to decide on questions of qualification, and to uphold with finality the people's right to choose the nation's leader," Poe, the leading candidate for President, said.
"I am optimistic that the high court, or Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, herself, will not only act expeditiously, but positively on the case to grant the temporary restraining order we are seeking," she added.
The Supreme Court is on recess until January 10, but its rules allow the Chief Justice to act on urgent cases without holding a session of the justices.
The SC has set Poe's petitions for oral arguments on January 19.
"I am putting my fate in the hands of the Supreme Court. We remain confident that our Justices will protect the rights of foundlings like me to run for public office. We enjoin the public to keep a keen eye on the proceedings and the decision on the case," Poe said.
"My lawyers have put forward strong evidence, relevant court discussions and principles, and jurisprudence that would show that I am a natural born Filipino with at least 10 years' residency in the Philippines," she added.
Last December 23, the COMELEC en banc granted the four petitions seeking to disqualify Poe from the presidential race. The poll body gave Poe's camp five days to seek relief from the Supreme Court.
Poe's name will remain in the ballot, according to the COMELEC, as the disqualification process has not run its full course.
"My hopes are high that what would be forthcoming is the high court's prompt correction of the COMELEC's ruling, which would affirm my standing as a candidate for President in May 2016," she said.

MANILA, Philippines - The 41st Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) awards night is over but netizens expressed their dismay and sentiments over the results with '#RIPMMFF2015' and '#MMFF2015Scandal' trended on social media early Monday, December 28.

Newcomer 'Yaya Dub' won Best Supporting Actress Award
While the AlDub Nation (fans of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza) are rejoicing for her first acting award as she won the Best Supporting Actress trophy for 'My Bebe Love: #KiligPaMore' movie, some netizens questioned if Yaya Dub really deserves her latest achievement.
Totoo naman talaga na Maine doesn't deserve that award. LIKE HELLO from the other side!! Nahiya naman si Nova Villa!! #RIPMMFF2015
'Honor Thy Father' Disqualification Case draws sentiments
Erik Matti, the director of the controversial film 'Honor Thy Father' (Con-Man) was a no-show at the recently cocluded MMFF Awards night. But instead, he gave his his acceptance speech read by Shiel Calde of Reality Entertainment at the ceremony.
The speech highlights Matti's disappointments on MMFF trends and encouraged change in the Philippine film industry.
You deserve better. Kaya tulungan niyo naman kami. Demand for better films! Demand for more choices in the cinemas! Kaya pa natin baguhin ‘to. Hindi ako titigil kung hindi rin kayo titigil. Hindi na ito tungkol sa Honor Thy Father. Buong industriya ng paggawa at panonood sa pelikulang Pilipino ang usapan na ‘to. Kaya, salamat na rin sa inyo, MMFF. Binuhay niyo ang pag-asa ko para sa pagbabago."
On Twitter, Matti posted sentiments on alleged 'MMFF 2015 Scandal.'
I'm sure di rin nila alam ano ang best directing. #RIPMMFF#MMFF2015Scandal
Netizen Kip Oebanda on Facebook shared his reaction on the disqualification of 'Honor thy Father' and said it is an issue of governance.
"1. I am not discrediting the results. I think that everyone is a victim in this instance. The director of #WalangForever herself has expressed dismay at the disqualification on Twitter. The loss of credibility of the awards is a structural issue. A transparency issue. 2. This is not an argument for the quality. I am not saying one kind of film is better than the other. I will keep that judgment to myself . 3. I am not flat out accusing MMDA of corruption. I am merely pointing out structural problems that could inevitably lend itself to corruption or the perception of corruption. Being perceived as corrupt is pretty bad."
Do you think this alleged MMFF 2015 scandals will change next year's festival? Do you believe that the quality of our movies nowadays is degrading as more producers target is just to earn big money? - TheSummitExpress.com

MANILA, Philippines - The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Executive Committee issued statement to clarify the misconceptions relating to the disqualification of Honor Thy Father (HTF) of Reality Entertainment Productions from the MMFF Best Picture Category of the MMFF 2015.
DISQUALIFIED? MMFF entry 'Honor Thy Father' received lightest sanction from festival committee. Photo Credit: Reality Entertainment
Here's the full text of the statement:
Following the pullout of the 8th entry Ang Hapis at Himagsik ni Hermano Puli from the Festival, MMFF wrote to the producers of HTF dated October 21, 2015 informing them that they were the next-in-rank film for the Festival and requesting for a Producer’s Certification." On October 22, 2015, the producer of the Film wrote the Executive Committee of MMFF that it has complied with all existing MMFF rules and regulations without mentioning its participation in another film festival. Having certified its compliance to all MMFF rules, it was officially included as an entry in the Film Festival on October 23, 2015. Unknown to MMFF, HTF was slated to have an exhibition and was actually shown at the Cinema One Film Festival held on November 8, 2015. This was only officially revealed to the MMFF through their letter dated November 5, 2015, received on November 6, 2015, only two days before the showing, not giving the MMFF enough time to deliberate on the matter. After a thorough, lengthy, and careful deliberation, the MMFF decided to impose the lightest sanction of disqualifying HTF from the selection as festival awardee for only the Best Picture category. MMFF could have imposed stiffer sanctions to the film, such as disqualification from all the awards or total disqualification from the Festival altogether. Let it be forgotten, being included in the MMFF also comes with responsibilities. An official entry is expected to uphold and observe the Rules of the Festival.
MANILA, Philippines - "The country's public school teachers will have a merrier Christmas under a Duterte-Cayetano government."
This was the promise made today by presidential contender Davao City Mayor Rodrigo "Rody" Duterte and his running mate Senate Majority leader Alan Peter Cayetano.
The tandem said if elected in 2016, they will grant an additional P 10,000 compensation for public school teachers over and above the Salary Standardization Law (SSL).
"Tatapusin natin ang malulungkot na pasko ng ating mga guro. Hindi dapat sila tinitipid at kinakaligtaan. Makakaasa ang ating mga guro ng matapang na solusyon at mabilis na aksyon para itaas ang kanilang mga sahod at iba pang benepisyo," Cayetano said.
The senator lambasted the government's proposed salary increase for public school teachers calling it "inconsiderate" and "negligible."
Cayetano said the government's proposed entry-level position of teachers is to grant an additional amount of P2, 205.00 from the present P18, 549.00 or a meager increase of less than 12%, spread over a period of four years, making the annual increase of a little more than P500.00, the lowest in recent history.
"Instead of repairing the government's erroneous compensation scheme for teachers, which past and present salary laws classified teachers as among the lowest paid government professionals, its proposed salary increase only reinforced this flawed system," Cayetano said.
"This what Mayor Duterte and I want to end. We will restore the dignity of the teaching profession. No more cheapskate wage increases which do not address burdensome taxes, cost of living and living conditions in general," Cayetano added.
Cayetano said their proposal is part of his Senate Bill 94, that grants public school teachers, locally-funded teachers, non-teaching personnel, and non-teaching personnel of the Department of Education (DepEd) additional compensation.
MANILA, Philippines - Alden Richards and Maine 'Yaya Dub' Mendoza collectively known as AlDub first movie 'My Bebe Love' topped the opening day of the 2015 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) and was able to break records for the highest first day gross, GMA News reported on Saturday.
'My Bebe Love: #KiligPaMore' (originally titled Rom-comin Mo Ako) received gross earnings of P60,462,169.57 on its opening day or about 40% of the total ticket sales for the eight competing movies for MMFF 2015.
The GMA News data can claim MBL defeated opening record set by Star Cinemas's 'The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin' which earned P 53.3 million last year.
The unconfirmed report also claimed that over 33 million pesos from Metro Manila and over 27 million pesos from different provinces were recorded.
Earnings for 'My Bebe Love' will be divided into five by giant film outfits Octo Arts Films, M - Zet Productions, APT Entertainment, GMA Films and Ai-Ai's MEDA Productions.
Reception for ALDub's 'My Bebe Love' film
Though 'My Bebe Love' garnered good ticket sales, it also earned negative reviews from film critics.
"If there is a Razzie Award for the MMFF, GMA Films' My Bebe Love would probably sweep this. The film may just be one of the worst films in MMFF history," DList.ph said.
Film review site ClicktheCity.com also gave the movie one and a half stars out of five, stating that "the film strings together its stars’ endorsements and roughly molds them into the shape of a movie, narrative playing second fiddle to the impulse to promote brands."
MMFF 2015 Top 4 Earners
Aside from 'My Bebe Love, 'Beauty and the Bestie,' 'All You Need is Pag-ibig' and 'Haunted Mansion' are among the topgrossers for this year's MMFF.
Official ticket sales figures for each of MMFF top 4 earners are not yet revealed due to MMFF policy to protect other films in the festival.
The annual Metro Manila Film Festival will run from December 25 to the first week of 2016.

The members of ABS-CBN News team in Iligan were ambushed by motorcycle-riding gunmen in Bangolo, Marawi City on Saturday afternoon, December 26, reporter Ronnie Enderes said.
The 3-man News team composed of Enderes, cameraman Emilito Balansag, and driver Gary Montecillo was traveling back to Iligan from Ramain, Lanao del Sur where they covered the bombing of a tower of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines.
“None of us were hurt but we could not describe the fear we felt,” Enderes said. ABS-CBN News has issued official statement and condemns in the strongest terms the attack on their News team.

"We urge the authorities to investigate this ambush and bring the perpetrators to justice soonest, even as we vow to continue with our duties as journalists," the news arm of ABS-CBN added.
